London Underground has begun closing Tube ticket offices, with Queensway and South Wimbledon the firsts to go. Hands Off London Transport will continue to organise direct actions at stations to highlight the damaging effect of these closures, and staffing cuts, on workers and passengers. Join us at Shepherd’s Bush station at 16:00 on Sunday 8 February for another protest!
Ticket office closures will lead to a worse service for passengers, particularly those unfamiliar with the system, with disabilities, or for whom English is a second language. As the RMT union’s statement makes clear, cuts and closures mean less accessible, less safe stations for both passengers and staff.
Although closures have now begun, a lively campaign could put pressure on Prospective Parliamentary Candidates, MPs, and GLA members in the run up to the May election and force a rethink from central government and City Hall.
HOLT will be working with RMT branches to organise more demonstrations at local stations in the coming weeks. Watch this space. If you want to organise an action at your local Tube station, please get in touch.
